If you have at least a few days to spare, here are some things your character can do off-screen.

Crafting non-magical objects
You can craft nonmagical objects, including adventuring equipment and works of art.
Practicing a Profession
Maintain a modest lifestyle while making enough money to not have to pay lifestyle expenses.
Recuperating
Recover from a debilitating injury, disease, or poison.
Research
Perform research, gain insight into mysteries, pore over dusty tomes or buy drinks for the locals to pry rumors or gossip from their lips.
Training
Learn a new language or gain proficiency with a new tool.
Buying a magic item
Find someone willing to sell a specific magic item, and try to buy it from them.
Carousing
Relax with a few drinks and a group of friends - what's the worst that could happen?
Crafting a magic item
This will require much more time and effort than crafting a mundane item, and you first need the formula for the item you want to make.
Crime
Make some extra cash, and try to not get arrested.
Gambling
Make some extra cash, and try to not to lose more money than you put in.
Pit Fighting
Win some money, become famous.
Relaxation
Take a break from your day-to-day, and just do nothing for a while.
Religious Service
Serve a temple, or go on a mission.
Scribe a Spell Scroll
Transfer a spell you know to a scroll. Spell scrolls don't cost spell slots to use, and can be given to other players or sold for profit.
Sell a magic item
Find a buyer willing to pay for a magic item, while avoiding con artists.
Work at a job
Find a temporary job and make some money.
